Global warming

posted by petersimon, bestacademicessays
Global warming is defined as the average rise in temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. It is one of the major problems facing the world today

Production of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is one of the causes of global warming. Carbon dioxide it acts as a blanket trapping heat and warming the earth. When we burn fossil fuels or cut down trees, carbon accumulates and also overloads the atmosphere.

One of the major problems resulting from global warming is the rise of seal levels. The sea level has risen about 8 inches since 1870 and is expected to accelerate in the coming years. This results to flooding of low lying coastal areas and cities such a Netherlands, Egypt and Bangladesh. This will lead to such countries to disappear completely.

Another major effect of global warming is the change of weather patterns. As a result of this change, many areas of the world are experiencing hurricanes, floods, annual precipitation and also seasonal temperatures variations. Due to high levels of greenhouses gases these weather changes are likely to last for decades.

Global warming has an effect on the wildlife. Rising temperatures are expected to disrupt the ecosystem, pushing to extinction of those species that cannot adapt. According to a research, global warming could lead to the extinction of more than a million species. The most affected animals are the polar bears. Some of the polar bear are drowning, as they have to swim for longer distances in order to reach the ice floes.

Ocean acidification is another effect of global warming. Due to atmospheric increase of carbon dioxide, the oceans absorb some of this carbon dioxide which in turn increases the acidity of seawater. Seawater that is more acidic has a deleterious effect on organism especially those with shells made of calcium carbonate.

Use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal and bio energy is one way of controlling global warming.  Renewable energy has the technical potential to meet the vast majority of our energy wants. Renewable technologies may be deployed quickly, are increasing value effective and conjointly create jobs whereas reducing pollution.

Reducing the usage of fertilizer is another way to curb global warming. Increased use of fertilizer increases the crop yield but in the long run it makes the soil less fertile. The massive amounts of fertilizers and pesticides gets settled on the food material causing health hazards.

Another efficient global warming solution is recycling. Recyclable items such as newspapers, glass and aluminum can be recycled efficiently. Even electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, laptops etc can be recycled efficiently.

Educating the younger generation about the hazardous effect of global warming can be a solution to global warming. Children should be encouraged to practice effective global warming solutions. Parents and teachers should conduct various competitions with the theme of global warming so as to encourage children in gathering related information. Parents should the role models to their children by practicing global warming solutions in their daily basis.

Diabetes

posted by peter simion,bestacademicessays

Diabetes is one of the metabolic disease in which a person experiences high blood sugar level in the body. These maybe as a result of malfunctioning of the pancreas to produce enough insulin or the cells do not respond to the insulin produced. There are three types of commonly known diabetes. They consist of:
  •    Type 1 diabetes
  •    Type 2 diabetes
  •    Gestational diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

This is also known as Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM).  It is characterized by loss of insulin producing beta cells of the islets of Langerharns in the pancreas, causing insulin deficiency. The cause of this type of diabetes is immune-mediated or idiopathic. Most people develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th birthday, often in early child hood or teenage years. Type 1 Diabetes presents 10% of all diabetes cases.

Type 2 diabetes

Also known as Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM). This type of diabetes results when the cells fail to use the insulin produced. It is the most known type of diabetes it presents90%of all diabetes cases worldwide. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases as we grow old. Also men whose testosterone levels are low are at higher risk of developing this type of diabetes.

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs when pregnant women without a previous diagnosis of diabetes develop high blood glucose level. This type of diabetes occurs in about2-5% of all pregnancies and may improve or disappear after delivery. The cause of gestational diabetes is transient though it can be fully treated but requires a careful medical supervision throughout the pregnancy. The majority of gestational diabetes patients can control their diabetes with exercise and diet. A woman whose diet before becoming pregnant was high in animal fat and cholesterol has a higher risk for gestational diabetes.

General signs and symptoms of diabetes

·         Polyuria
·         Polyphagia
·         Blurred eyesight
·         Weight loss
·         Feeling thirsty or tired
·         Having soles that heal slowly
